People Pins are a big favorite here at Sarajane's Polymer
Clay Gallery.
No paints are used in making them, and all the patterns and designs are
hand built of polymer clay.
(See Cane Building for more information on this
process) Faces are the hardest canes to get just right, and need to be
made in a fairly large size to build in a lot of detail. Some are built
to the size of a three-layer cake before reduction to the diameter of a
Quarter--or even smaller, for the Girl Beads!
In many "types" from Ladies of Color and saucy
Dance Hall Girls, (shown at right) to Angels
and Japanese Girls, each handformed Girl
Pin has costume details that give her a unique personality.
Sarajane's work has been described as "Erte meets Gahan Wilson",
and that blend of dark whimsy and fashion is very evident in these
pins.
Pins are appliqued onto a clay backing, with slices of canes for the
face, the hair, the hair ornaments, and for some of the clothing.
Dance Hall Girls also glitter and shine with shimmering gowns and Big
Hair--big enough to support a feathery ornament!
These girls also have gold jewelry and metallic accents, as well as
the occasional well placed beauty mark.
The Japanese Girls
feature tiny combs and flowers in their hair, and an array of textile-like
designs in their kimono, with gold and silver accents.
These Geisha are costumed in every color there is, and no two are exactly
the same.
Each piece is a conversation starter.
There is also a smaller version of the Japanese Girl Pin
available--just the head and hair, with no kimono. These come with
a wide variety of flower colors in the hair, and gold accents.
Ladies of Color have several
different face types, and are all dressed in colorful garments and hats
or other hair details, as well as metallic touches in the costumes and
jewelry. Some have red hats!
Ladies of Color are also featured among the Dance Hall Girls and the Angels.
Each is an individual of strength and character, as you can see at right.
All pins are available in a rainbow of color options.
The Angels have shiny
robes, and gold leaf halos, and sometimes sport earrings and an attitude,
as well as a little eyeshadow...
They are available in pearly white, and lots of colors, including christmas
red and green.
They make heavenly Christmas ornaments, pinned to ribbons and hung on
a tree.
Or pin one to the bow on a wreath for a true decorator touch for the
holidays. The angels shown here are of the "Sweet" face variety.
Others are made using all sorts of face canes.
